Madeline Prager, viola
Madeline
began playing viola at the age of 9. Her first teacher, Vernez Olshausen,
stressed importance of playing with a “beautiful tone”, thereby
planting the seed of Madeline’s love for the sound of the viola. Her
studies continued with Detlev Olshausen and Bruno Giuranna. Madeline has
performed extensively as a soloist and chamber musician in Europe, where
she lived for 25 years. She served as principal violist of the
Wuerttemberg Chamber and the Stuttgart Philharmonic Orchestras. For
10 years Madeline held a Professorship of Viola at the Music Conservatory
in Karlsruhe, Germany. She has won several performance awards, including a
Hertz Memorial Performing Arts Scholarship from UC Berkeley.
Since
her return to the Bay Area in 2000, Madeline has taught at the University
of the Pacific, The Crowden School, and performed as principal violist
with various orchestras including the San Francisco Chamber Orchestra, the
Pacific Chamber Symphony, the Berkeley Symphony, and the Stockton
Symphony. She has appeared with the New Pacific Trio, the Temescal
Trio, Trio Concertino, the Sierra Chamber Society, the New Century Chamber
Orchestra, the Gold Coast Chamber Players and recorded at Fantasy and
Skywalker studios. In addition to playing as much chamber music as
possible, Madeline is an avid supporter of public education, teaching
strings in the Berkeley Unified School District. She lives locally with
her husband and two children.
